Bayard Taylor (1825 – 1878) was an American poet, literary critic, translator, and travel author. In 1866 Taylor traveled to Colorado and made a large loop through the northern mountains on horseback in a group that included William Byers, editor of the Rocky Mountain News. His letters describing this adventure were later compiled and published as Colorado: A Summer Trip.The book is a series of journal entries Taylor wrote to his readers as he toiled in the summer of 1866 from Denver across the front range, into the Gore Range, down into the Arkansas river valley, across South Park, and back to Denver.
